Remarks on Board

Our class

Our blog is written by our eleventh grade U.S. History class at The Williams School in New London, Connecticut. We are currently learning about Maritime history and how it has affected the U.S. We have taken multiple trips to the Mystic Seaport. Now that we have explored maritime history and our own local history, we have been tasked with bringing the past and the present together through this Logbook Project.  We are led by our teacher Macy Kleinfelder along with Krystal Rose from the Mystic Seaport. We will be blogging our adventures in taking a logbook from the Charles W. Morgan into a Google Earth map.

About the Project
The Mystic Seaport recently added Mystic Seaport for Educators, a collaborative community designed to bring the resources of the Seaport to a wider audience. Many artifacts and manuscripts have been included. One area where the Seaport wants to expand the website is interactive maps that trace whaling voyages. We will be working with Log 152 from the 27th voyage of the Charles W. Morgan which took place in 1901-1902. We will transcribe the log and use the information gleaned to create an Excel spreadsheet that will then be used to create an interactive map on Google Maps/Google Earth. We will be working in pairs; each group will work with 17-18 pages of the logbook.

Don't forget to check out Mystic Seaport for Educators!
