The Charles W. Morgan, the oldest surviving
commercial ship in America, was first launched on July 21st, 1841 in
New Bedford, Massachusetts. At 113 feet long, she was decommissioned after an
80-year career with 37 voyages. She came to the Mystic Seaport in November of 1941.
In 1966, she became a National Historic Landmark and is now the last wooden
whale ship in existence. She was removed from the water multiple times during
her stay at the Seaport, and in 2008 the Mystic Seaport decided to restore the Charles W. Morgan. She was re-launched
on July 21st, 2013, her 172nd birthday. In the summer of
2014, she will be embarking on her 38th voyage and will return to
cities such as New London, Newport, New Bedford, and Boston. In Boston, she will tie up next to the U.S.S. Constitution, the oldest ship in
American history. After a multimillion-dollar
restoration, today she is open to visitors at the Mystic Seaport.
